Changing the default layer image quality (6.5)

To improve performance and rendering time while you're working on a composition, you can temporarily reduce the quality of individual layers by setting their Quality property to Draft or Wireframe and set the Quality to Best when you're ready to produce final output. (See "Changing the layer image quality" on page 130.) In After Effects 6.5 you can set a new General preference to make all new layers use the Best Quality setting.

Note: Duplicated or split layers retain the Quality setting of the original layer.

Tip iconYou can also improve performance and rendering time as you work by using the Fast Previews button in the Composition window. (See "Using OpenGL interactive previewing (6.5)" on page 179.)

To set the default quality of new layers:

  1. Choose Edit > Preferences > General (Windows) or After Effects > Preferences > General (Mac OS).
  2. Select or deselect Create New Layers At Best Quality. (If this option is deselected, the default quality is Draft.)
